Company reports average daily ridership of 647,700 and NT$17.4 billion in revenue

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Railway said on Monday that its average daily ridership reached 647,700 last year, setting a new record.

Taiwan Railway held a press conference on Monday to review its performance one year after its incorporation. Taiwan Railway General Manager Feng Hui-sheng (馮輝昇) said the company's daily ridership increased by 7.8% last year compared to 2023, per CNA.

Feng said the company’s revenue reached NT$17.4 billion (US$580 million) last year, an increase of approximately NT$700 million from 2023. Revenue from non-transportation businesses reached NT$4.644 billion, including NT$863 million from Taiwan Railway’s bento sales.

Feng said as of November, Taiwan Railway projected a NT$12 billion loss for the previous year. The loss was attributed to the unchanged ticket prices and the restoration costs following the Hualien earthquake in April and Typhoon Gaemi.

The company said it will raise ticket prices this year, with a proposal set to be submitted to the board for approval in February. The move aims to restore the company to profitability.

Feng added the company aims to achieve NT$19.618 billion in transportation revenue this year, with an additional NT$5.774 billion expected from non-transportation businesses. The company is expected to turn a profit next year.
