German newspaper praises Taiwan as top travel destination

德國報紙稱讚台灣為最佳旅遊目的地

Journalist highlights Taiwan's cuisine, transportation, social order, art, religion

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung praised Taiwan as a must-visit destination, CNA reported on Monday.

Journalist Monika Maier-Albang highlighted Taiwan's cuisine, transportation, social order, artistic designs, and religious beliefs. She said Taiwan is a place full of warmth and charm, offering surprises to each visitor.

Maier-Albang said Taiwan's cuisine was influenced by Chinese and Japanese cultures. She suggested visitors follow locals in line to find authentic food, such as chicken fillet, beef noodles, and bubble tea.

Maier-Albang called Tainan the "city soaked in sugar," highlighting its rich history as a center of Taiwan's sugar industry. Visitors are encouraged to try local delicacies such as brown sugar bun cake.

She said Taiwan's public transportation is also convenient and well-organized. The high-speed rail and metro are punctual and efficient, and passengers keep their voices down during travel.

Maier-Albang said while traffic congestion is common in major cities, residents adhere to traffic regulations. The "walking man" in traffic lights helps guide pedestrians at crosswalks.

Despite the pandemic easing, many in Taiwan still wear masks in public. She said this reflects the people's attention to public health.

Maier-Albang pointed out selfies as a distinctive part of Taiwanese culture, with locals welcoming tourists' photos and enjoying interactions. Additionally, many tourist attractions provide designated photo spots for tourists.

Some pet owners dress their pets in clothes or push pet strollers on the streets. Maier-Albang said this trend reflects not only compassion for animals but also highlights the country's low birth rate.

Lastly, Maier-Albang said Taiwan's religious practices preserve historical rituals while integrating modern technology. In addition to tossing moon blocks to communicate with deities, some temples in Taiwan offer services for worshippers to make wishes through smartphones.
