Site recognized for train rides through misty mountain forests


TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s Alishan ranked 19th on the New York Times' list of the world's 52 top travel destinations, CNA reported on Wednesday.

The media company said Alishan has been recognized for its train rides through misty mountain forests, offering travelers a unique scenic experience. Other featured destinations include Assam in India, Greenland, Angola, Nicaragua, and Mount Fuji in Japan.

Travelers can depart from Chiayi City, with the red-and-cream-colored train operating twice daily. Passengers can board the first train at 4 a.m. or take the 6 a.m. daily to the mountains for a sunrise view.

The five-hour journey includes a stop at Fenqihu Station. Passengers can enjoy local bento box meals and aiyu jelly there.

The ideal time to visit Alishan Forest is from November to April when rainfall is less.

The Alishan Forest Railway, a 71.4-kilometer route, can boast of 112 years of history. The railway, damaged by a typhoon in 2009, resumed service in July.

The New York Times annually highlights 52 top travel destinations worldwide. In 2023, Taipei was included in the list for its food and culture.
