Only people from countries with visa-exempt status eligible for digital nomad visa

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Detailed requirements for a new visa that enables digital nomads to stay in Taiwan for up to six months have started to emerge.

On Dec. 20 in Tainan, the National Development Council held the “Taiwan Digital Nomad Visa Launch Ceremony,” coming into effect on Jan. 1. The Bureau of Consular Affairs on Jan. 2 posted a list of details for the new visa on its website.

At the top of the page, a major caveat not previously mentioned is that only individuals from countries with visa-exempt status are eligible for the digital nomad visa. Nationals from most of these countries could already stay in Taiwan for 90 days without entering the program.

In addition, UK and Canadian passport holders could already extend their stays up to 180 days before the new visa scheme had been launched.

Digital nomad visa applicants must complete and sign the application form, prepare two passport photos, and possess a passport with at least six months of validity left. To prove remote work experience, applicants must submit a personal resume or portfolio that includes their academic background and work experience.

Applicants must show a valid work contract from their employer or, in the case of freelance workers, contracts for current cases. They will then need to complete a description of the intended activities form.

To be eligible, applicants must meet one of the following three conditions:

Those who have obtained a digital nomad visa in another country and provide proof
Individuals aged 30 or above who have an annual income of at least US$40,000 (NT$1,200) in the last two years
Individuals aged 20 to 29 who have an annual income of at least US$20,000 over the same period
Applicants must present proof of bank deposits over the previous six months that average at least US$10,000 per month. In addition, they must provide proof of international health insurance and full hospitalization insurance that covers the entirety of their stay in Taiwan.

Those already in Taiwan must also present photocopies of their passport pages showing their most recent visitor visa and immigration entry stamp. Applicants who have arrived in Taiwan through the visa exemption need only present a photocopy of their most recent immigration entry stamp.
