White paper outlines 4 key initiatives for marine conservation
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ocean Affairs Council issued Taiwan's first white paper on national marine pollution control on Wednesday.
The Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling (管碧玲) attended a Wednesday press conference at the Kaohsiung Software Park. Kuan said the white paper, released under the Marine Pollution Control Act, highlights the nation's evaluation and reflection on marine pollution.
It outlines four key initiatives, including monitoring and investigating marine environments, improving marine waste management, advancing pollution response measures, and fostering education on marine conservation, CNA reported.
Kuan hopes the Marine Pollution Control Act, the fund for marine conservation, and this white paper will promote the nation's efforts on marine conservation.
According to Article 12 of the Marine Pollution Control Act, the fund is used for measures such as marine pollutant cleanup, strategies for marine pollution prevention, and the implementation of environmental monitoring. The fund will be implemented in January.
Kuan said the council will lead in formulating strategies and guide relevant government agencies in their implementation. She added the policies and measures would be revised every five years.
