Taiwan doctors say DASH diet counters high blood pressure in winter

台灣醫師稱得舒飲食可對抗冬季高血壓

Cold weather leads to vasoconstriction which can raise blood pressure

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Winter weather is a challenge for those suffering from high blood pressure as veins and arteries constrict, sending blood pressure even higher.

Doctors believe a DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), involving plenty of vegetables and moderate amounts of fruits, can achieve beneficial effects such as lowering blood pressure, achieving balanced nutrition, and achieving weight loss, per CNA.

According to a 2021 study published by the journal “Hypertension Research,” when the temperature drops from 20 C to 10 C, the blood pressure of some patients increases by 5-10 mmHg. Furthermore, the frequency of cardiovascular incidents in winter is significantly higher than in the summer, leading to a rise in mortality.

Family medicine and weight loss doctor Hsu Chih-yu (許芷瑜) shared the case of a 57-year-old executive in the financial industry who was trying to lose weight while taking high blood pressure medication. His average blood pressure when measured at home was 150/90 mmHg, which is significantly higher than a healthy blood pressure reading.

After a brief interview, Hsu learned the individual’s high blood pressure may be due to an unhealthy diet, irregular work and rest, and changes in outdoor temperature.

Hsu suggests patients with high blood pressure who take high blood pressure medication consume a typical meal consisting of 50% vegetables, 25% protein, and 25% starch. Hsu also suggests this executive follow the five principles of the DASH diet, such as consuming whole grains, lots of vegetables, an appropriate amount of fruit, replacing red meat with white meat, and nuts and healthy oils to control blood pressure.

Hsu warned that patients with poor kidney function and those with diabetes or poor intestinal function should consult a physician or nutritionist for an appropriate diet. Furthermore, if your blood pressure does not improve after making dietary adjustments, it is recommended to seek medical advice to formulate a personalized health plan.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare also reminded the public to pay extra attention to high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease during the winter. This includes consuming medication regularly and remembering to stay warm and hydrated during exercise in the winter.
