Taiwan establishes 'ambassador-at-large' role to enhance diplomatic efforts
台灣設立「無任所大使」強化外交打拼
Senior diplomats will be selected to facilitate non-governmental cooperation
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The foreign ministry established the role of "ambassador-at-large" to promote Taiwan’s comprehensive approach to diplomacy.
Senior returning diplomats at or above the level of consul general or counselor will be selected for this new position, a source familiar with the matter said. Candidates must have unique qualifications for handling specialized projects, such as language skills or overseas experience, Liberty Times reported.
They will undertake key initiatives, including establishing or reopening diplomatic missions, advancing proposals within international organizations, and facilitating non-governmental cooperation.
Ambassadors-at-large will be assigned by relevant departments based on project needs. Their tenure will be determined according to the requirements of their specific assignments.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) believes that many diplomats possess professional experience and an extensive network of useful contacts. However, when they return to Taiwan, certain constraints often limit their potential contributions, he said. Thus, Lin supports revitalizing senior diplomatic talent to promote value-based diplomacy.
Taiwan aims to enhance international cooperation and enhance alternate forms of diplomacy, including through parliament and NGO exchanges.
