Taiwan delegation visits Latvia to explore business opportunities

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan and Latvia signed a deal to cooperate in the drone industry during a business matchmaking event on Tuesday (Nov. 19).

Hu Kai-hong (胡開宏), chair of the Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Latvian Defense and Security Industry Alliance. It seeks drone business opportunities and economic partnerships with Latvia and its neighbor, Estonia, according to the Taipei Mission in Latvia.

Hu led a drone industry delegation to Riga from Nov. 18-20 to participate in the Taiwan-Latvia-Estonia business matchmaking conference.

Taiwan Representative to Latvia Andrew H.C. Lee (李憲章) remarked that due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and growing Chinese military threats to Taiwan, the organization of the delegation to Latvia underscores Taiwan's commitment to the Baltic, Central, and Eastern European countries. It also highlights the strategic importance of building a democratic supply chain for key industries, Lee said.

The representative said Taiwan's advanced ICT and semiconductor industries and high-quality workforce, make it an excellent economic and trade partner for Latvia, Estonia, and EU countries.

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) is also leading a delegation across Europe to help Taiwanese businesses network with European partners to strengthen technology exchange and bolster the drone supply chain.
