Taiwan Textile Federation meets Indonesian economics minister in West Java
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese textile manufacturers are considering Indonesia as a potential location for investment, according to Indonesian Economics Minister Airlangga Hartarto on Monday (Nov. 4).
Airlangga told the Jakarta Post he met with 15 manufacturers from the Taiwan Textile Federation, who showed interest in relocating factories from China and Vietnam to Indonesia.
The talks are reportedly in the preliminary stages, and Airlangga did not disclose any specifics on potential investment amounts.
During the meeting, federation members raised concerns about Indonesia’s high natural gas prices and challenges in securing environmental permits. According to CNA, Airlangga assured the manufacturers he would work to address these issues.
Airlangga also highlighted that free trade negotiations with the EU are a priority for the incoming Prabowo Subianto administration. He said that if the two sides reach an agreement, it will be easier for Taiwanese textile companies based in Indonesia to export to the EU.
The industry-government meeting followed the Taiwan-Indonesia Textile Industry Conference in the West Java capital Bandung between Oct. 29 and Oct. 30.
The Taiwan Textile Federation, organized by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, promotes exports from suppliers of "premium textiles," according to its website.
