Designer blends Eastern and Western influences, pays homage to artistic heritage

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese-Canadian designer Alex S. Yu (游十儒) opened Vancouver Fashion Week on Oct. 22 with a collection that blended Eastern and Western influences.

“Alex in Wonderland” featured 50 models showcasing the designer's latest designs. The pieces featured his signature vibrant colors, bold prints, and unconventional silhouettes, per CNA.

Vancouver Fashion Week is the second largest fashion show in North America. Its Spring/Summer 2025 (SS25) collection shows ran until Sunday (Oct. 27), according to Vancouver Fashion Week.

Yu, who hails from a family of artists, seamlessly integrated his family’s artistic heritage into the collection. Several pieces featured fabric printed with calligraphy, which was written by his grandfather.

The calligraphy was transcribed from his great-grandfather's poetry, as he was a writer during Taiwan's Japanese colonial period (1895-1945). The piano music in the show’s accompanying video was performed by Yu's mother.

Blurring the lines between fantasy and reality, this anniversary collection pushed the boundaries of wearable art. The year marked the 10th anniversary of the Alex S. Yu brand and was his 10th year at Vancouver Fashion Week.

Yu said he wanted to inspire audiences to embark on a journey of self-discovery. He encouraged them to explore their dreams and express their individuality.

Born in Taipei, Yu emigrated to Canada with his parents as a child. After completing his undergraduate studies in fashion design in Vancouver, he furthered his education at London College of Fashion, earning a master's degree.

Yu was awarded the title of "Emerging Designer of the Year" by Niche magazine in 2014. Later in September that year, he made his debut at Vancouver Fashion Week, launching his label.
