Southern city's five major ports to hold festivities in November

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung will host its Seafood Feast in November, featuring a series of food and cultural experiences at its five major fishing ports.

The city, known for its abundant seafood, is Taiwan's top producer in terms of both volume and value. The autumn and winter seasons, peak fishing periods for coastal areas, will see a month-long celebration until Dec. 8, per CNA.

Taiwan’s coastline stretches over 1,600 km. Kaohisung's strategic location and exceptional natural harbors have made it a hub for Taiwan's distant-water fishing industry, accounting for over 50% of the nation's total fishery production and value, according to Marine Flavor of Kaohsiung.

The city boasts 16 ports, seven fisheries associations, 4,000 hectares of aquaculture farms, and over 2,700 fishing vessels. The festivities will take place at the major ports of Mi-Tuo, YongXin, Xingda, Cianjhen, and Kezailiao.

Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) encouraged visitors to savor local delicacies such as sanma, grilled squid, and milkfish. He also highlighted the unique charm of Kaohsiung's coastal areas, which offer a glimpse into traditional fishing village life.

The Seafood Feast will kick off at Mi-Tuo on Nov. 9 and 10, followed by YongXin on Nov. 16 and 17. Xingda and Cianjhen will host the event on Nov. 23 and Nov. 30, respectively.

The festival will conclude at Kezailiao from Dec. 7 to 8. This year’s event has also partnered with local illustrator, Croter.

Croter has created large-scale art installations featuring playful characters and local seafood. These installations will be on display at the Mituo Coastal Gallery from Nov. 4-27.
