Hawaii representative in Taiwan hopes flights begin in 2025

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The representative office of Hawaii in Taiwan is pushing for direct flights between Taipei and Honolulu, according to the office’s Executive Director, Alex Lei.

Lei said the office aims to have China Airlines launch the direct route in 2025, as reported by Hawaii News Now on Oct. 14. Currently, travelers from Taiwan to Hawaii must transit through Tokyo, Korea, or the Philippines, making the journey more challenging, Lei noted.

In addition to tourism, Lei highlighted ongoing exchanges between Taiwan and Hawaii in areas like culture, green energy, and agriculture. He also expressed interest in introducing more Hawaiian-made products to the Taiwanese market.

According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, 25,885 visitors from Taiwan traveled to Hawaii in 2018.

Lei made the remarks during a visit to Taiwan by a delegation of Hawaiian lawmakers, led by Hawaii Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke. The delegation also met with President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍).
