Taichung police dogs looking for loving owners after 7 years of duty

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Four founding dogs of the Taichung City Police Department K-9 unit have completed seven years of service and are ready for retirement.

The four police dogs —Tiny, Candy, Baby, and Pinky— are available for adoption by the public through the submission of application materials until 6 p.m. on Friday (Oct 18), per CNA.

Police authorities said that after reviewing applications, they will select one qualified candidate and one backup. The successful applicant must contact the police department three days after receiving a notification, or the adoption will be offered to another applicant.

Members of the Taichung Police Department's K-9 unit and other staff enjoy priority in the adoption process.

Taichung City Police Department said retired police dogs have participated in important missions such as drug screening, detecting explosives, and numerous search and rescue operations. The K-9 unit’s keen sense of smell has helped solve many cases and protect the citizens of Taichung.

Taichung Police Commissioner Lee Wen-chang (李文章) said the police dogs have shown extraordinary courage and dedication during service. Lee called on interested citizens to participate in the adoption of retired police dogs to provide these heroic, lifesaving dogs with warm homes.

Lee said that although these retired police dogs will no longer wear police dog vests, they are still the guardians of society. Lee said they look forward to enjoying a peaceful and happy retirement and passing on their spirit to the next generation of police dogs.
