Company aims to cultivate more semiconductor talent
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The board of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) ratified a proposal Wednesday (June 5) to donate up to NT$4 billion (US$123.6 million) to high schools and universities to fuel interest in the chip sector.
In a statement on its website, the world’s largest contract semiconductor maker named National Taiwan University (NTU), National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), and National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) as the recipients of its donations.
However, TSMC also said part of the funds would reach senior high schools and girls’ senior high schools. The aim is to “enhance long-term semiconductor research, education, and talent cultivation,” the statement said.
Facing a shortage of qualified personnel, TSMC has expanded its cooperation with major colleges, per CNA. In 2019, the company launched a semiconductor course at NTHU, which was expanded last year to include a dozen other colleges, involving more than 7,600 students.
Last month, TSMC announced it was working on seven new fabs during 2024 based on strong global demand for semiconductors. The Taiwanese company also attracted attention for its overseas projects in Kumamoto, Japan, the U.S. state of Arizona, and Dresden, Germany.
