台灣首隻本土警犬即將亮相

Formosan mountain dog named Jaguar undergoing explosives detection training

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Formosan mountain dog named Jaguar could become Taiwan’s first Indigenous police dog.

Jaguar is undergoing training to detect gunpowder and C4 at New Taipei City Police Department, CNA reported. If the dog graduates from training, Jaguar can assist police officers with law enforcement duties between one and a half to two years old.

Already, the 9-month-old canine has demonstrated fearlessness, sociability, and noise tolerance, New Taipei Police's Criminal Investigation Corps K-9 unit head Ma Ching-chi (馬清基) said. This is the first attempt by a K-9 unit to train a Formosan mountain dog in explosives detection, Ma said.

To date, Jaguar has exceeded expectations in all aspects, rivaling even German Shepherds and Labradors. The dog’s agility, ambition, and high stability have impressed everyone, shedding new light on Taiwan's Indigenous dog breeds, Ma said.

Ma said he has long desired to train Taiwan’s Indigenous dog breed. He first encountered the Formosa mountain dog through a colleague.
