Road race kicks off in Taiwan's Penghu

公路賽在台灣澎湖拉開序幕

80 drivers from international and local teams to race around islands

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s outlying island county of Penghu opened a road rally race on Saturday (April 13) that will run for two days and see sports car drivers race around the islands’ coastal roads.

More than 80 cars and drivers from Taiwan and abroad are participating in the competition, while more than 500 people turned out to watch, per CNA. The races are taking place on public roads, and traffic controls have been put in place for safety.

The Penghu Times reported two crashes on the first day, as drivers at times struggled to get used to the route, though no serious injuries occurred. One of the racers who crashed is the son of Taiwan influencer “Boss Liao (廖老大),” who lost control of a Porsche and crashed into a guardrail.

Liao was reportedly unfazed by the accident. “The probability of crashing is very high, but the probability of injury is very small,” Liao said, per TVBS.

“If a race car meets safety standards, it’s actually safer than a road car,” he said.

The race is mainly taking place in Xiyu Township, which makes up one of Penghu’s three major islands out of a total of 90 islands and islets.
