TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) confirmed on Saturday (April 6) that its second Japan plant will be built in Kikuyo, Kumamoto Prefecture, the same city as its first plant.
Prime Minister of Japan Kishida Fumio visited TSMC’s first factory in Kikuyo on Saturday and met with TSMC CEO Wei Che-chia (魏哲家), according to Yomiuri Shimbun. Wei announced that TSMC’s second Japan factory will be in Kikuyo, CNA reported.
Wei said TSMC will continue to have a positive impact on Kumamoto. “We will work hard to build stronger relationships with local companies,” the CEO said.
Mayor of Kikuyo Yoshimoto Takatoshi welcomed the decision regarding the second plant, saying, “We will work with the prefecture to ensure that construction proceeds smoothly.”
Kishida said that the second factory will have a major ripple effect not just on Kyushu but on Japan as a whole. The second factory is scheduled to start operating at the end of 2027 and will produce 6- and 7-nanometer chips, Yomiuri Shimbun reported.
The prime minister also expressed his condolences to Taiwan for the earthquake on April 3.
